Visit Eze

Visit Eze, but which hamlet? It's a commune spread over 2 or 3 hamlets. In fact, we distinguish between Eze plage (or Bord-de-mer or sur-mer), i.e. by the sea, modern Eze and Eze village, the most attractive for visitors.

Eze village perché de la Côte d'Azur

Eze village

The old village of Eze is only 600m from the sea, but at an altitude of 429m.
The hamlet is perched on a promontory, which makes it a very pleasant, even enchanting village.
You have to wander through the narrow streets. The village is small and you can't get lost. You'll discover solid stone buildings, passageways under houses, staircases, numerous boutiques, artists' studios and panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the steep coast.
And don't forget

What to see in Eze

The church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption

This church dates from the 2nd half of the 18th century. It replaced an old church in ruins, based on plans by architect Antonio Spinelli (the same man who laid out the place Garibaldi in Nice).
The Baroque interior features a single nave but numerous chapels.

Eze, an old village?

The site was irregularly frequented by late Neolithic man. The Romans were also present. The Castellar oppidum bears witness to this.
The first permanent inhabitants of the hamlet settled, on a permanent basis, around the 2nd century BC, the height providing them with relative security from looters and other warriors.

Practical information

Beware, the train station is located at the very bottom of Eze village. It's not the right choice for visiting the old village, except for hiking the Nietzsche trail (400m ascent).
Prefer the bus from Nice or Monaco.

Bus

From Nice, ligne d'Azur 82, direction Plateau de la justice, stop Eze village.

The Nietzsche Way

The Nietzsche path links Eze Bord-de-mer to the old village. This path is relatively steep. It takes about 1 hour to reach the old village, after a 400m climb.
Beware, there is no shade on the path. The climb is likely to be strenuous on a hot summer's day. Prefer to set off early, with hat and water bottle. Walking shoes recommended.

Eze Bord-de-mer

This bourd Bord-de-mer is also called Èze-sur-Mer and remains often referred to as Eze plage.
It's a small seaside hamlet at the foot of the cliffs of the old village. There's a train station and a few public services.
Life is quiet here, a little less so in summer when some yachtsmen drop anchor. Eze plage offers limited interest for visitors, compared with the old village.
